MISSOULA, Mont. - The Washington State University men's and women's cross country teams were both victorious at the Montana Invitational held Saturday at the University of Montana golf course.
Both squads used strong pack running to overcome Weber State in what was a very close team competition. "To be able to come in today and beat Weber State is great," said Cougar Head Coach Jason Drake. "It was a pretty exciting day, great team effort all around."
On the women's side, WSU sophomore Haley Paul won her third race of the season, covering the 6,000 meter course in 21:24, outdistancing second place finisher Allie Brosh of Montana by nearly 30 seconds. Also scoring for WSU were Meghan Leonard, Isley Gonzalez, Kelly Ramirez and Collier Lawrence. Freshman Marisa Sandoval also made a strong showing, moving up to the pack to finish sixth overall on the team.
The Washington State men were led by redshirt freshman Woody Favinger, who placed second with a time of 25:06 on the 8,000 meter course. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Freimuth had a breakout race, finishing in fourth place, right ahead of teammate Drew Polley, who came in seventh. Senior Justin Ireland and freshman Derry Betts rounded out the Cougar top five.
"The men's team pack got the job done," Drake said. "Everyone ran solid, although we still need to close the gap on our third runner."
Seth Pilkinton of Weber State won the men's competition with a time of 24:46, leading his team to a second place finish.
The Cougars will have a week off in preparation for the Pre-Nationals meet in Terra Haute, Ind., and the EWU Invitational in Cheney, Wash., Saturday, Oct. 15.
