Terre Haute, Ind. - The Washington State women's cross country team was led to a 17th-place finish by Sara Trané in the Blue section race at the Brooks Pre-Nationals Meet Saturday, Oct. 13, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at Terre Haute, Ind. The Cougar men came in 19th in the White section race.

Sophomore Sara Trané (Pixbo, Sweden) continued her consistent performance for the Cougars, finishing the 6,000m women's White race in 39th place with a time of 21-minutes, 6 seconds.

"Sara Trané had a great day for the women," WSU Head Coach Jason Drake said.

Senior Isley Gonzalez (71st, 21:26.0), junior Meghan Leonard (80th, 21:29.5), senior Collier Lawrence (115th, 21:54.9), and freshman Ashlee Wall (169th, 22:27.9) also scored for WSU. Chelsea VanDeBrake and Lisa Egami finished 180th and 202nd, respectively. Trané, Gonzalez, and Leonard all improved on their times from last year's race. The women's team was 17th out of 38 teams competing in the women's Blue section race.

"Ashlee Wall had a nice day as a freshman," Drake said.

WSU senior Andrew Jones helped the men to 19th place. Jones completed the 8,000 meter course with a time of 24-minutes, 12-seconds to place 62nd. The other scorers for the Cougars were seniors Drew Polley (83rd, 24;20.2) and senior Alex Grant (100th, 24:39), and sophomores Dan Geib (108th, 24:33.9) and Dominic Smargiassi (125th, 24:48.5). The men finished 19th overall in the 40-team field. Chris Williams placed 132nd for WSU.

"The men all ran pretty well," Drake said. "We averaged about 30 seconds faster than last year. Overall, it was a solid performance."

The Pre-Nationals is divided into two seeded sections, Blue and White, for the 79 men's teams and 76 women's teams. The section races had the top-ranked programs divided equally among them to ensure top competition in each race.

UTEP was the top men's team in the White race, and Josh McDougal (Liberty) captured the individual title with a time of 22-minutes, 56 seconds. McDougal also won the individual champion in last year's white race. In the Blue race Lopez Lomong (23:30) won the race to help Northern Arizona to the team title.

Stanford repeated as the top women's team in the Blue race. Susan Kuijken (19:56) of Florida State was the individual champion. In the White race, the Princeton women's team won, and Jenny Baringer (19:49) of Colorado was the fastest individual runner.

In other competition Saturday, sophomore Sam Ahlbeck (25:40.8) finished fifth on an 8,000-meter course at the EWU invite. In the women's 6,000-meter race freshmen Marisa Sandoval (19:36.8) and Amanda Andrews (19:48.1) placed 12th and 13th respectively. Sophomore Becky Williams (21:32.7) also finished 26th for the WSU women.

Up next for the Cougars is the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, Oct. 27, at Corvallis, Ore.
