LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Washington State University women's swim team defeated UC-San Diego 170-91, but fell to UCLA 98-158 in a double-dual meet at UCLA's Men's Gym Pool Saturday.
The Cougars won both of the relay events, moving their dual-meet record to 7-1 this season. In the 200 medley relay, Taryn Ternent, Christina Swanson, Rachel Dong, and Lindsay Henahan led WSU to victory in a time of 1:46.90. The Cougars' 200 freestyle relay team with Ternent, Dong, Swanson, and Henahan also claimed victory with a time of 1:37.32.
"We got beat by a very well coached, talented, number two ranked Bruin team. However, the Cougars showed excellent competitiveness in every race today," WSU head coach Rocco Aceto said. "In both relays we were ahead three out of four legs and touched out on two of them. In the 200 fly we were ahead for seven of eight lengths and Hubley got touched out. In the 100 breaststroke Dong was ahead three of four lengths. On paper, it looks like UCLA drowned us. In reality, they did a number on us, but we were incredibly close on a number of opportunities."
Leading the way for WSU, freshman Taryn Ternent (Edenvale, South Africa) grabbed two second-place finishes and helped lead two relay teams to victory. Ternent placed second in both the 50 freestyle in 24.06 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 52.41 seconds.
Also swimming well for the Cougars, sophomore Melissa Hubley (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada) placed second in the 100 butterfly in 57.91 seconds, and third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.96.
This meet came on the heels of two weeks at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., for the Cougar Swim Team.
"After a long and successful training camp where we lived, ate and trained like Olympians in Colorado, we are very much ready to get home, rest a little, and get on with the second half of the season," Aceto said.
WSU competes next against the University of Nevada in Reno Friday, January 26 at 7:00 p.m. PST and Saturday, January 27 at 11:00 a.m.
