Box Score

YAKIMA, Wash. - Tyson Boston drove in the winning run for the WSU Cougar baseball team when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Cougs squeaked out an 8-7 victory over Oregon State Sunday at Yakima Valley CC. For WSU, which improved its record to 6-13, it was the third time in the last four weeks that a game was decided in the final at-bat.

With the game in the last half of the ninth and with one out, Cougar first baseman Stefan Bailie hit a line-drive that bounced over center fielder Eric Stark's glove allowing Bailie to reach safely with a triple. The Beavers intentionally walked Bookie Gates and Brent Robertson to load the bases, but the move backfired two batters later when OSU reliever Stephen Copeland beaned Boston forcing home Bailie for the winning run.

Oregon State took advantage of strong winds blowing toward center field as they scored their first five runs on four homers off Cougar starter Jamin Svendsen, including two by Beaver first baseman Andy Jarvis. Jarvis sparked OSU's offense all game as he ended the day three-for-five with three home runs and four RBI.

In the fourth, second baseman Bookie Gates put WSU on the scoreboard as he drove in his first of four runs of the afternoon as he doubled to right-center field scoring Bailie to make it a 5-1 game.

Cougar pitcher Zach Fisher surrendered a Beaver run in the fifth, but Oregon State could not sustain any serious offensive threat against Fisher as he allowed two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings after relieving Svendsen in the third.

Gates continued his hot hitting in the sixth inning with a blast over the left field fence, driving in Mike Knight to cut the Beaver lead to three runs at 6-3. Boston continued the one-out Cougar rally when he drove in Robertson, and Aaron Smith followed that by doubling-in two more runs to tie the game at six.

Oregon State scored its final run of the game in the seventh to gain a 7-6 lead, but Gates drove in Mike Knight in the Cougars' half of the inning to make the score even once again.

WSU's next game is the first of a weekend series against Oral Roberts at Tulsa, Okla., Friday starting at 3 p.m. PST.
