Cougars Host UCSB In First Home Game Since Dec. 4

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - UC Santa Barbara ventures north in search of extending its winning streak to four games Tuesday night as it battles Washington State.

The 23rd-ranked Gauchos (7-3) have defeated a pair of Pac-10 teams in their current three-game winning streak, including a 77-53 pasting of USC on last Tuesday. Kayte Christensen scored 14 points and Erin Buescher added 10 and eight rebounds. The Gauchos started the second half on a 9-0 tear to expand a 31-25 halftime lead.

The Gauchos, who are 2-1 against the Pac-10, also defeated Oregon and lost to Arizona. They won the three games on their homestand by an average of 24.3 points.

Buescher, an All-America candidate, is averaging a team-high 14.8 points. Kristi Rohr and Stacy Clinesmith both are averaging 11.7 points while Christensen contributes 11.5 per contest.

Washington State (3-5) is playing its first home game since Dec. 4. The Cougars snapped a three-game losing streak with a 79-71 victory at Bowling Green on Dec. 20. Jen Kerns scored 18 of her career-high 20 points as Washington State hit 18-of-22 free throws.

Alke Deitel came off the bench to hit 8-of-10 shots and score 23 points while Jessica Collins, making her first collegiate start, contributed a career-high 12 points. Kerns also had seven assists, six rebounds and four steals to offset nine turnovers.

Deitel leads the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game and Kerns is second at 12 per contest. The Cougars have made just 39.4 percent of their shots this season and are averaging only 61.3 points per game.

This is the first meeting between the schools.
