PULLMAN, Wash. - Cougar freshman Deka DeWitt scored a pair of unassisted goals to help Washington State defeat visiting Oregon State 2-0 Friday afternoon in the Pacific-10 women's soccer opener for both squads.
DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.), who was honored as the Pac-10 Player of the Week Monday, earned the first multiple-goal match of her career. Her first score came in the 40th minute when she picked up a loose ball in the box and hammered a shot to the upper right corner. DeWitt's insurance goal, her sixth of the season, came five minutes into the second half. She beat a Beaver defender, dribbled inside the box and fired a shot from 17 yards into the lower right corner of the goal.
"We know how important the first Pac-10 game is and we came out tense at the start, but once we got the first goal we were able to settle in and work out the kinks," said DeWitt.
WSU's freshman goalkeeper Shannon Wilson (Las Vegas, Nevada) earned her second straight shutout and fourth of the season. Wilson also finished with four saves.
Oregon State nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when a shot by sophomore Coral Slater (San Diego, Calif.) struck the crossbar and bounced straight down in front of the goal mouth. Wilson was able to pick up the ball before it crossed the goal line.
WSU hosts the Oregon Ducks (3-8-1 / 0-1-0 Pac-10) Sunday, Oct. 12 at noon.
