The Washington State soccer team (6-10-2, 2-4-2) lost to Arizona (6-10-2, 2-5-1) 2-1 at Lower Soccer Field Friday. The match marked the return of former WSU head soccer coach Dan Tobias, who took the head coaching job at Arizona June 27, 2003.

"I think the game was an up and down game," WSU Head Soccer Coach Matt Potter said. "I think the game was a midfield battle that didn't really create a lot of chances for either team...credit to Arizona for putting away two goals on the road."

Candice Wilks scored her seventh goal of the season at the 37:32 mark, four minutes after coming on as a substitution. She dribbled down the left-flank, taking a shot from the left-side corner of the eight-yard box into the far-side netting.

Wilks scored the game-winner at the 61:22 mark. Althea Jones served a lofted ball from the midfield line to Wilks who ran onto it 20-yards out, blasting the ball past WSU goalkeeper Sara Leibowitz into the low left-corner.

Nicole Wilcox capitalized on a scramble in front of the Wildcat goal 73 minutes into the match for the lone WSU score. UA goalkeeper Natalie Juarez blocked a close-range shot taken by Alix Rustrum into the box where Wilcox gathered the ball and volleyed into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.

Juarez made seven saves for the Wildcats in the second half as the Cougars outshot Arizona 10-6 in the second 45 minutes of play. Juarez recorded nine saves overall.

The Cougs outshot UA 19-14 with Leibowitz recording three saves.

Arizona posted six corner kick attempts while WSU had none.

The Cougars will complete their 2003 season Sunday, Nov. 9 at noon against Arizona State.
