MINNEAPOLIS - Danny McIntyre scored two goals, including the game winner less than four minutes into the match, to lead the University of Detroit past Washington State 4-0 in a non-conference women's soccer match at the St. Paul Campus Soccer Field.
Detroit (2-0-0) has outscored its opponents 9-0 this fall. The Cougars (1-1-0 overall) suffered their worst defeat since an identical 4-0 blanking in 1995 at the hands of 3rd-ranked Portland.
McIntyre's first score came from inside the six-yard box at the 3:38 mark. She headed a crossing pass from Monica Kaltreider inside the left post past Cougar freshman goalkeeper Shannon Wilson (Las Vegas, Nevada).
Washington State settled down defensively and trailed just 1-0 at the half.
Detroit struck early in the second half as Kaltreider assisted a Jody Handley goal at 49:24. Less than two minutes later, McIntyre nailed her second goal on a direct kick from 12 yards. Eva Havares closed the scoring for Detroit with a free kick taken from inside the 18-yard box.
The Cougars conclude their road trip Sunday, Sept. 7 with a 10 a.m. match with host Minnesota. The Golden Gophers are currently ranked 25th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Umbro poll.
