This Week: The Washington State University women's golf team opens its 2011-12 campaign at the Circling Raven Collegiate Invitational, Sept. 12-13, in Worley, Idaho. The tournament will be held at Circling Raven Golf Course, with 36 holes being played Monday and 18 on Tuesday. Play begins at 8 a.m. both days with a shot gun start.
The Team: Led by third-year head coach Kelli Kamimura, the Cougars return six players off of last year's squad and welcome in a pair of newcomers.
Last Year at Circling Raven: The Cougars saved their best score for the final round of last year's Circling Raven Collegiate Invitational, posting a 301 (+13) to card a three-round total of 920 (+56), tying for seventh and finishing just one stroke back of the top five in the 20-team field. WSU's final-round score was tied for second-lowest in the field on the final day. Leading the way for the Cougars was Ellen Park, who was one of three Cougars to finish in the top 25. Park, who earned medalist honors for the Cougars for the first time in her career, finished in a tie for 14th with a 227 (+11). Emma Betland was just one stroke back of Park, and finished in a tie for 18th while Ali Thompson, playing as an individual, posted a three-round total of 229 (+13) to finish 25th.
The Course: Circling Raven Golf Course will play 6,111 yards and a par 72 for both days of competition.
The Field: The 20-team field includes WSU, tournament-host Gonzaga University, Boise State University, University of British Columbia, Brigham Young University, Cal State University Fullerton, Cal State University Northridge, Eastern Washington University, University of Hawai'i, University of Montana, Montana State University, Northern Arizona University, Portland State University, Sacramento State University, University of San Francisco, Samford University, Seattle University, Southern Utah University, and Xavier University.
