PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State volleyball team won its home opener with a 3-1 win over UNLV Friday night during the first day of the Baden Cougar Challenge Tournament at Bohler Gym.

The Cougars, now 5-1 on the season, defeated the Rebels (2-2) 30-16, 30-24, 29-30, 30-25, before 990 fans.

Adetokunbo Faleti led WSU with 18 kills but five players reached double-digit kills as freshman setter Corina Beyer had 60 assists. Freshman middle blocker Cassie Robbins landed 10 blocks with Kelly Rosin adding eight more. It was a big night at the net as WSU landed 17 team blocks but UNLV had 16 blocks.

The Rebels were led by a pair of hitters, Lauren Miramontes and Jennifer Johnson, with 15 kills each. Erin Greenwood had seven blocks while Melody Nua had 47 assists. UNLV hit .090 as a team while the Cougars hit .222.

"I'm happy with the victory. I'm not happy with how we played," WSU Head Coach Brian Heffernan said after the match. "I think that in game one we displayed how we were capable of playing and UNLV came back and made some adjustments on us. We had a real hard time scoring from the left side tonight because we were hitting the same shot to center area of the court every single time so whether that's an issue with the set being too fast to the outside and not being able to use their range. We allowed UNLV to get into a digging rhythm against us and it really slowed our offense down."

In an earlier match, Boise State (2-2) defeated UC Davis (1-2) 30-23, 30-28, 30-17.

Saturday's action resumes at 10 a.m. with the UC Davis versus UNLV match, followed with WSU taking on Boise State at noon.
