LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Washington State women's basketball team fell to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 45-37, at the Women's Sports Foundation Classic, Sunday.
The loss drops WSU to 0-2 on the season. Wake Forest improved to 1-1.
Freshman Colleen Betteridge led the Cougars with 10 points. Wake Forest was led by Alex Tchangoue, who tallied a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Wake Forest held a 21-20 advantage at the end of the first half. The Cougars tied the game at 23 courtesy of Betteridge 3-pointer nearly three minutes into the second half, but the Demon Deacons immediately responded with a 3-pointer of their own from Yolanda Lavender and never trailed again.
Both teams struggled from the field as Wake Forest converted 15-of-60 attempts (25 percent) while WSU made 14-of-55 field goals (25.5 percent).
The difference came at the foul line as Wake Forest made more free throws than the Cougars attempted. For the game, WSU was 5-of-11 from the charity stripe while Wake Forest made 13-of-24 attempts.
The Cougars return to action for their home opener against the Sacramento State Hornets, Friday, Nov. 17 at 4:30 p.m. at Beasley Coliseum.
Following the game the team will hold a silent auction at the Beasley Coliseum Outer Concourse at 7 p.m. Items to be auctioned off include autographs and merchandise from the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Storm, an overnight package at the Coeur d' Alene Resort and much more. Proceeds will help fund the team's 2008 foreign tour.
