Sept. 21, 2005

The soccer team traveled to our neighboring state of Oregon this past weekend to play in the Oregon State University Nike Invitational. We had worked hard all week at practice and the attitude of the team was intense and we were ready to play. We had high expectations for the weekend and something to prove because of our last two losses. We were going into the weekend determined to fight and come out with two wins.

Our first challenge of the weekend came even before Friday's game started when our bus broke down right before we left for the game. Luckily, many people came to our rescue and we carpooled to the field with enough time to warm up. We started the game a little shaky and struggled to find a good rhythm throughout the first half. We went into half time tied 0-0 and knowing we had not given our best performance. Still, the team fought through it and one minute into the second half Megan Hyte capitalized on an opportunity, scoring the lone goal of the game. The rest of the game we played hard and defended well as a team, which lead to a shutout and our first win of the weekend.

Saturday was a fun and relaxing day. We spent time with families, did homework, and watched some soccer games. In the evening, we went to Anna Miller's house where we ate an amazing home cooked meal that left us full and prepared for Sunday's game. We were very grateful to the Miller's for their hospitality.

On Sunday, we faced Long Island University, a team we had had the opportunity to watch play already, so we knew what to expect. It was a hard physical game and we played well the first half, although again it was tied 0-0 at half time. The second half we came out with a little more fire and played some of the best soccer we have played all season. We were moving the ball well and threatening the goal often, which lead up to our goal that Alix Rustrum scored off of Allison Scurich's header from Anna Miller's corner kick. Again, we defended as a team, from our forwards to our goalkeepers, and came out with our second shutout and second win of the weekend.

All in all, it was a good weekend. We went in and accomplished what we had set out to do and learned more about our team. We are two steps closer to where we want to be, and we are moving in the right direction. We look forward to another hard week of practice and another challenging weekend when we travel to California and Nevada!
