PULLMAN, Wash. - USRowing Junior Rower of the Year Rebecca Burns has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to compete for the Washington State University women's rowing program beginning in the fall of 2012, head coach Jane LaRiviere announced Thursday.

Burns earned the USRowing Junior Rower of the Year Award in overwhelming fashion by earning over 40 percent of fans' votes. After losing her mother in early 2011, she persevered and coxed both the junior and masters teams for the Annapolis Rowing Club.

Burns coxed the Southeast men's junior four and eight at the USRowing Club National Championships and closed out the summer by winning three gold medals at the USRowing Masters Championship.

In addition to club rowing, Burns competes on her high school crew team for head coach Todd Nix at Broadneck High School in Annapolis, Md. As a sophomore, she coxed the junior women's varsity four and lightweight junior varsity four to first-place finishes at the Baltimore Championships.

Burns is a member of the National Honors Society, plays the violin for the Broadneck High School orchestra, and is interested in pursuing a degree in movement studies at Washington State University.
