STANFORD - Senior Caroline Austin was one of several Washington State track and field competitors to reach lifetime-best marks Friday at the 39th Annual Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Austin, from Chehalis, Wash., ran the women's 3000m steeplechase in a PR time of 10 minutes 23.77 seconds which was ninth in the section but the third-best steeplechase time in WSU women's history. Austin sliced nearly five seconds off her previous PR time.
Ruby Roberts, a junior from Kingston, Wash., ran a PR in the 5000m of 16:25.94 for 15th place in the second section but her time is fourth-fastest all-time in Cougar history.
In the 400m hurdles, Erin Allen (sophomore, Kenmore, Wash.) ran a PR time of 1:00.61 for third place in the event and the ninth-best time in Cougar all-time standings.
Freshman pole vaulter Kristine Felix (Wailuku, Hawai'i) cleared an outdoor PR height of 12-feet 6 3/4 (3.83m) to tie for fifth in the invitational section. Felix, who cleared 12-11i/3.94m during the indoor season, the sixth-best mark in WSU all-time records, Friday had the sixth-best outdoor mark in WSU all-time records.
Shawna Fermin (senior, Victorville, Calif.) ran the 400m dash in a season-opening time of 53.37 seconds for second place among the 26 women racing,
In the men's 100m dash, Andre McBride (San Leandro, Calif.) ran a prelim time of 10.73, eighth-fastest, and then ran a time of 10.78 for sixth place in the final. Senior Brett Blanshan's prelim time of 10.76 was ninth and he just missed the final.
Byron Howell (freshman, Seattle) won their heats of the men's 400m dash and Sealby's 48.00 was a PR and sixth-best on the day while Howell's 48.03 was also a PR and seventh-best of the 43 racers.
Dana Wells (senior, Tieton, Wash.) finished second in the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 52.08. Andrew Gonzales (senior, Kennewick) ran his first 3000m steeplechase in a time of 8:58.37 which was seventh in the top section of the event.
Notable Cougar performances in the men's field events Friday included Trevor Rogers (senior, Richmond, Calif.) with a long jump of 23-11 1/2w (7.30m) for third place. Jovan Vukicevic (senior, Serbia) opened his outdoor season by high jumping 6-11 (2.11m).
Several Cougars were still scheduled to race late Friday night, with Jono Lafler's 10k race set to begin at 10:48 p.m. Any later results will be included in the Saturday recap of the Stanford Invitational.
