LAKELAND, Fla. - Led by the Top 5 efforts of Maria Kostina and Kim Welch, the Washington State women's golf team captured the team title at the Lady Moc Classic at the Par 72, 5,997 yard Cleveland Heights Golf Course at Lakeland, Fla., Sunday.

Maria Kostina, a native of Nhakabino, Russia, finished tied for second in her first 54-hole tournament as a Cougar with a dazzling three-day scoring average of 74.7. Kim Welch improved her scoring each round and capped off the final round with the best score of the day at even par to finish tied for fourth.

"Maria played very well for her first three day event," said Head Coach Walt Williams. "Kim and Jay-Lee played well today, and it was an exciting, all-around team effort."

Stephanie Parsley placed in a tie for eighth and captured her first Top 10 finish of her young WSU career. Jay-Lee Longbottom recorded her seventh career Top 25 finish at 12th place, followed by a Top 25 finish for Katharine Dorris at a tie for 23rd, and a 75th place culmination for Ashleigh Gilhuly.

"Florida Atlantic is a good team that played in regionals last year, and it was a great battle all the way to the end," said Williams. "This is the first event we have won over three days since I have been here, and we did it with three sophomores and two freshman."

The Cougars started the day four shots back of second round leader Florida Atlantic, but out shot the Owls 300 to 308 for a four-stroke victory. The Cougars captured their second consecutive title this spring, after last week's victory at the Inland Collegiate.

The Cougars look to extend their winning streak to three March 10-11 at the Duck Invitational at Eugene, Ore.
