Final Stats

Bookie Gates and Collin Henderson had the answer against California ace Trevor Hutchinson, but the rest of the Cougars couldn't solve the Bear right hander's offerings and visiting California pulled out a 5-1 win over WSU in the Pacific-10 Conference opener for both teams Friday at Harris Field on the LCSC campus.

Cougar starter Eddie Bonine (3-4) had a solid performance for WSU (10-11), allowing just three earned runs in eight innings. Jamin Svendsen worked the ninth inning.

Hutchinson (6-3), the best pitcher in the Pac-10 last year, struck out nine and walked just one in handcuffing the Cougars to help California (17-11) pick up their first conference win.

Gates, who sat out two games last week at Oregon State because of a sore ankle, collected three hits off Hutchinson, including a double, while Henderson continued his hot hitting with a pair of singles. Wes Falkenborg and Jon Baeder had the only other WSU hits.

Gates improved his team-leading batting average to .400. He also leads the team with 32 hits and 21 RBI. Henderson, meanwhile, is riding a six-game hitting streak. In those six games he is a collective 10-for-20 and has had two hits in four of the six games.

WSU's only score came in the eighth inning after Cal had built a 5-0 lead. Henderson opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a single by Gates, then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Falkenborg's fly out to center field.

The Bears jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, with Matt Einspahr scoring Carson White on a ground out and Noah Jackson singling home Brian Horwitz. In the third Cal added another run when David Nicholson opened the inning with a single and later scored on White's ground out.

In the fifth White singled and later scored on one of two Cougar errors. The Bears added their final run in the sixth when Jackson walked to open the inning and came home while WSU turned its second double play of the game.
