LONG BEACH, Calif. -- - Washington State batters could not handle host Long Beach State's pitching, as the 49ers posted a 7-1 win at Blair Field Friday night.
The Cougars (0-4) had four hits in the game and could not overcome an early deficit against Long Beach State (4-3).
Tony Banaszak (0-1) started on the mound for WSU, going six innings and allowing seven hits and four runs, two earned, in the losing cause. Abe Alvarez (3-0) got the win for the 49ers, allowing one run on four hits in 5 1/3 innings.
After falling behind 4-0 after four innings, the Cougars got on board in the top of the fifth. Realini reached with a double and was brought home on single to the left side by McGrath.
The 49ers added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the outcome.
The two teams continue the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Blair Field.
