LEWISTON, Idaho -- Matt Hellman hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Lewis-Clark State Warriors a 10-7 victory over Washington State Tuesday night at Harris Field. The loss drops the Cougars to 12-22 while the defending NAIA champions improved to 34-8.
Hellman's game-winning blast off WSU pitcher Nick Kenyon came with one out after Kurt Kashelnik led off the inning with a single to right field and Trevor Brown reached on a Cougar error. Kenyon was the last of six pitchers used by WSU Head Baseball Coach Tim Mooney, going one and one-third innings as his record dropped to 0-2.
After Adrian Thomas gave the Cougars a quick 1-0 advantage with a lead-off home run in the first, both teams had trouble manufacturing runs until the seventh inning. Cougar starter Garrett Alwert allowed one hit in his three innings of work, and relievers Tyson Thompson and Sean Donlin gave up one run each in the fifth and six innings before giving way to Donny Davis in the sixth and Justin Cayetano in the seventh.
Warrior starter Nick Gravella gave up only two runs in seven innings on five hits in seven innings, but it was reliever Wes Hutchison who earned his registered his second win of the year, as he pitched the last inning and a third and surrendered one hit.
With the game tied 2-2 after the seventh inning stretch, LCSC put five runs on the scoreboard, highlighted by a solo home run by Brandon O'Leary and a two-out, two-run blast by Nick Bullen
WSU answered the Warriors' offensive outburst by scoring five runs in the top of the eighth inning, starting when Bookie Gates drove in two runs with a single through the middle of the infield. After Stefan Bailie scored on a wild pitch, Evan Hecker sent Tanner Kahler and Gates across the plate to make it a 7-7 ballgame.
