Final Stats

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Washington State's four-game winning streak was snapped Friday behind solid pitching from Sacramento State starter Kevin Marzion in a 9-2 loss at Hornet Field.

WSU (9-6), winners of six of their last seven, could not find their groove at the plate. The Hornets (10-6) held the Cougars to five hits and notched 10.

"I want to compliment their pitcher," WSU head coach Tim Mooney said. "He was very efficient and located the ball very well. Even when we got him into trouble, he wouldn't let us back in it."

Eddie Bonine (3-2) took the loss for the Cougars. He went six innings, allowing 10 hits and nine runs. Marzion (2-2) went seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits.

"Eddie didn't pitch bad, he just couldn't locate the ball very well," Mooney said. "He didn't have his changeup and that's usually a very effective pitch for him. That made it difficult."

Senior second baseman Bookie Gates was the bright spot for the Cougars. Gates, who entered the game leading WSU with a .414 batting average, was 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.

The Cougars took an early lead in the game. Gates' single in the first inning plated Evan Hecker to give WSU a 1-0 lead. But the Hornets responded with a four-run burst in their half of the first and added two more runs in the second to gain a 6-1 lead.

WSU added another run in the third on a fielder's choice that scored Justin Hart to cut the Sacramento State lead to 6-2. However, the Hornets added two runs in the fifth inning and another in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Because of predicted rain Sunday, the Cougars will play a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.
