SPOKANE, Wash. - Freshman Micaela Castain scored her fourth goal in the last two matches, but Washington State was defeated 3-1 by Denver in the Gonzaga Women's Soccer Tournament, Friday.
In the seventh minute, senior Emma Stolz sent a through ball from the left side near midfield across to Castain in the box. After Denver (4-1-0) goalkeeper Lara Campbell made a save on Castain's initial shot, the Washington State (2-5-0) forward put home the rebound for a 1-0 Cougar lead.
Denver got even in the 30th minute when Kalie Vaughn poked home a loose ball at the goal line during a scramble created from a Pioneer corner kick.
Castain had an opportunity to give Washington State the lead in the 47th minute when she dribbled into the box from the right side off a turnover, but fired wide left from eight yards out.
Kaitlin Best gave Denver a 2-1 advantage when she converted a penalty kick in the 54th minute. Cougar junior Ali Fenter had a shot from the top of the box sail wide in the 56th minute.
The Pioneers sealed the victory in the 79th minute when Best beat Washington State goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo inside the far right post from just inside the 18-yard box. The Cougars had one more good scoring chance in the 88th minute, but Fenter's header caromed off the crossbar.
"When you do not perform in the manner you are capable of and do not stick to your roles and the gameplan, you are not going to have success," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "There were some bright spots. We went up a goal which is encouraging. We also competed very well when we went down a goal. We are just not doing the things individually and collectively right now that we are capable of doing."
The Cougars will take on Colorado, a 2-0 loser to Gonzaga, Friday, at 10 a.m., Sunday in Spokane.
