Nine WSU Athletes Picked To Pac-10 Academic Teams

PULLMAN, Wash. - Nine Washington State University student-athletes have been named to Pacific-10 Conference academic teams in basketball and swimming, with four Cougars picked to first teams.

Heading the list are a pair of women's basketball players, Victoria Harrod and Katie Nyseth, and two swimmers, Kelly Miedema and Elizabeth Schmied.

Earning second team honors for their work in both the classroom and in competition are swimmer Gretchen Chambers and Alke Dietel in women's basketball. Honorable mention honors went to swimmer Suzanne Muirhead, Jessica Collins from women's basketball and Paul Mencke from men's basketball. Mencke was also a honorable mention pick in the fall with the Cougar football team.

WSU student-athletes honored by the Pac-10 were:

Women's Basketball

  • Victoria Harrod, first team, junior, 3.96 in human development, Nepean, Ontario
  • Katie Nyseth, first team, junior, 3.86 in biological systems engineering, Cheshire, Ore.
  • Alke Dietel, second team, senior, 3.58 in humanities, Halle, Germany
  • Jessica Collins, honorable mention, junior, 3.70 in business, Reno, Nev.


  • Kelly Miedema, first team, senior, 3.42 in zoology, Cape Town, South Africa
  • Elizabeth Schmied, first team, senior, 3.69 in zoology, Woodinville, Wash.
  • Gretchen Chambers, second team, senior, 3.32 in psychology, Adelaide, Australia
  • Suzanne Muirhead, honorable mention, senior, Mukilteo, Wash.

    Men's Basketball

  • Paul Mencke, honorable mention, junior, 3.25 in education, Spokane, Wash.
