BERKELEY, Calif.-- The Washington State University women's swim fell to California Saturday, 147-105. The Cougars recorded wins in both relay events against the Golden Bears, last season's seventh-place finisher at the NCAA Championships.

"With our expectations and where we are at this point in the year, being able to begin and end the meet with wins against a legitimate top 10 team is something we feel good about and helps us reinforce where we think the program can go," said Head Coach Rocco Aceto.

WSU got off to a strong start by winning the first event of the day, the 200 medley relay, with a team of Nicole Chinn, Rachel Dong, Lindsay Henahan, and Taryn Ternent. The group's time of 1 minute, 46.34 seconds edged out a Cal team containing 2000 Olympic gold medallist Staciana Stitts.

"I was really excited that my split was faster than it has ever been before," said Dong, who swam the second leg of the race. "Also racing against Staciana Stitts, and Olympic gold medallist, was a great experience."

Dong, a sophomore co-captain, also grabbed a second-place finish for WSU in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.12.

Junior Melissa Hubley recorded another second place for the Cougars with her 2 minute, 3.33 second performance in the 200 butterfly.

The Cougars also ended the meet with a strong showing in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet of Ternent, Dong, Henahan, and Andree-Anne LeRoy claimed victory for WSU with a time of 1:36.62.

"Our first three swimmers gave me a really good lead, and I'm glad we were able to come away with that last win," said LeRoy, who anchored the team to victory. "It made an impact and let us finish on a good note."

"It's great to be racing again and see that the team is ahead of where we were at this point last year," co-captain Ternent said. "I think we learned a lot today and can only get better."

"I was very excited to be a part of both relays that beat a team a such a high level as Cal," Henahan added.

Washington State opens its home season against the University of San Diego at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 27 at Gibb Pool in Pullman.
