Pacific is a word that means peaceful, tranquil and calm.
Oregon coach Ernie Kent laughs. "Step out on the court," he says, "and you'll find out this league is the complete opposite of that."
The league's best story is Washington State, which this week became a ranked team for the first time in memory.
The Cougars are No. 23 in the USA TODAY/ESPN Coaches' Poll; it is unclear when they were last ranked in it except to say it was before USA TODAY took over administration of the poll from UPI in 1991-92. WSU is tied for No. 22 in the Associated Press media poll, ranked for the first time since 1983, before any of its players were born.
"It feels good to be ranked," guard Kyle Weaver says. "The Cougars are for real."
