PORTLAND, Oregon -- Center fielder Dusty Edler was 4-for-5 and hit for the cycle as the Washington State (17-14, 7-4) baseball team defeated Portland State (11-21, 1-11) 14-9 Sunday at Civic Stadium.

Edler, a redshirt junior transfer from Yakima, Wash., made only his twelfth start of the year and entered the contest hitting only .242. With the four-hit game Edler raised his average 74 points to .316. The cycle was the second this year for the Cougs, although the first by Jason Grove in the Alumni game did not count because it was an exhibition.

Edler started the afternoon with a two-run triple in the second, then added a three-run homer in the third. After hitting into a double play, Edler connected for a single in the seventh and then completed the cycle with a double down the left field line in the last frame.

Dave Wheeler (2-2) was once again impressive as he took the mound in the series finale. Wheeler kept the Viking lineup in-check for six innings as he allowed only three runs off three PSU hits. Robin Guiver made his fifth appearance of '98 out of the bullpen and threw one shutout inning. Shane Rice and Ole Vigeland combined to pitch the last two innings.

Adam Flohr (4-6) went to the mound for the PSU Vikings for the second time in the series, this time as the starter. Flohr was roughed up by the Cougar lineup, giving up nine hits and seven runs in only two and a third innings of work. Ryan Patrick, Davis Kile, and Ryan Faust all saw action in relief for the Vikings and combined to allow five runs in the final six and two-thirds innings. Rick Southall and Matt Stewart led the Viking hitting attack with two hits apiece. Southall was 2-for-5, including his seventh homer of the year.

Edler led all players with his 4-for-5 afternoon, but a host of Cougs were not far behind. Shawn Stevenson, Jeff Scherer, and Ray Hattenburg all added two hits to the winning cause. Third baseman Greg Mitchell hit his seventh home run of the year, a three-run homer in the first inning.

Washington State jumped out to an early 10-0 lead after their half of the third inning. Portland State made a late rally in the eighth scoring five runs, but it was not enough to take over the 14 runs of WSU.

Kelley and Hattenburg were the big Viking killers this weekend as they both continued to swing hot bats. In his first steady action since suffering an ankle injury, Hattenburg was 6-for-11 with two doubles and a triple in the series. Kelley was 7-for-15 and added two home runs to his Pac-10 North leading total. Kelley now has 14 on the season, which is nine off of John Olerud's school record of 23 set in 1988.

The Cougs won the four-game series 3-1 and are now locked in a battle for the Pac-10 North crown. WSU is tied for second place with Oregon State. The University of Washington, after a series split with OSU, are now only a half game ahead of both WSU and OSU. After an eight-game stretch on the road, the Cougs will return to action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. game against Gonzaga at Bailey Field. Washington State will then return to Pac-10 North play with a pivitol four-game set with rival Washington beginning Friday, April 17. .
