Cougars in Top Five After Opening Round at Thunderbird Invite

ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Washington State senior Chris Collins and redshirt senior Jordan Madison sit tied in ninth place after the first round at the Thunderbird Invite held at the par-73, 6,781 yard Sunbrook Golf Course, Feb. 12.

Collins carded a 3-under 70 to end the first round tied for ninth with several other players. Redshirt senior Jordan Madison also finished the day in the top ten after shooting a 3-under 70 to match Collins' effort. Madison is competing as an individual in the tournament and his score will not be counted as part of the Cougar's team score. Both golfers are only one shot out of fifth place before heading into the final round.

Junior Jordan Mason and freshman Austin Hurt each shot 1-under 72 which landed them tied for 34th. Freshman Nick Grigsby finished the day shooting an even par and tied for 42nd. Competing for the second time as a Cougar freshman Kevin Tucker heads into the final round after shooting 1-over 74. He finished the day in 55th place.

Two Cougars competing as individuals in the tournament were senior Kevin Chen and redshirt senior Chad Carlson. Chen completed the day shooting 3-over 76 which left him tied for 71st, while Carlson finished shooting 8-over 81 and sitting in 98th.

The Cougars sit in third place at 5-under 287 heading into the final round of the tournament. Host Southern Utah leads the field with a commanding 10-under 282. Second place in the tournament is held by Denver at 6-under 286.

The final 18 holes of the Thunderbird Invite tee off Tuesday, Feb. 13.
