LEWISTON, Idaho - - Washington State beat Portland 7-1 in a weather-shortened six-inning contest at the Banana Belt Tournament Friday at Harris Field.
WSU starter Bryce Chamberlin (2-0) pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits and one run to notch the win. Josh Roberts received the loss for the Pilots, allowing five runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.
The win improved the Cougars to 2-9 on the season. Portland dropped to 3-6.
Freshman Jay Miller continued his tear at the plate, going 3-for-3 and driving in two runs. He also hit his first career home run, a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning Miller is a combined 5-for-7 in the tournament. Grant Richardson was 2-for-4, while Bruce Jacobsen added two RBI. Justin Pierce had two hits to lead the Pilots.
Portland got out to an early lead, taking a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first. WSU answered with two runs in the bottom of the third.
Miller led off the inning with a double and Richardson was hit by a pitch. Both then scored on Jacobsen's double to left centerfield, giving WSU a 2-1 lead.
The Cougars continued to pour it on, adding three runs in the bottom of the fourth. With Jeff LaRue and Brandon Reddinger on base, Miller singled to centerfield, scoring Reddinger from second base. Miller, who advanced to second on the throw, came home when Derek Bruce doubled down the left field line. Bruce completed the scoring in the inning, when he scored on Richardson's single to right center field.
WSU added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, when Zapper McGrath scored from third base on a throwing error and Miller homered.
All action for the day was cancelled after the sixth inning because o a light rain that fell throughout the afternoon. Action resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. The Cougars are slated for a 1 p.m. start against host Lewis-Clark State.
