Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Nick Ison threw eight innings of one-run ball while Jay Miller and Jared Prince each collected two hits as Washington State University defeated Brigham Young, 5-1, during play at the River City Classic Friday morning at Dobbins Stadium.

With the win WSU improves to 8-2 on the season while BYU remains winless at 0-8.

For just the second time this season WSU did not score first as BYU's Kent Walton led off the game with a home run down the left field line. WSU quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Jay Miller led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Jeff Miller. Paul Gran's double to left tied the game then Gran came home on Mike Gilbert's bases loaded walk.

WSU extended the lead in the second to 4-1 as Jay Miller scored on Gran's RBI groundout to second. Jeff Miller then scored on Prince's double to right-center. WSU made it 5-1 in the third on Simi Reynolds' infield RBI single, scoring Mike Gilbert. That chased BYU starter Patrick Wells, who went 2 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.

From that point on it was left to the WSU pitchers to protect the lead. After the home run by Walton, Ison found his rhythm. He set down the BYU side in order three of the next four innings, retiring 12 of 13 batters in one stretch. Ison improved to 3-0 this season and finished the game surrendering just six hits while striking out one. Travis Webb pitched the ninth, registering two strikeouts.

With his first-inning double, Jay Miller extended his hitting streak to 13, including three games last season. Miller scored two runs in the game while Gran added a pair of RBIs.

BYU used three pitchers Friday, as James Platt and Cortland Andrews worked 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Walton and Marcos Villezcas each had two hits to lead the BYU offense.

WSU continues play at the River City Classic Saturday when it faces UC Davis. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium.
