PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State women's swimming team fell to the hands of visiting Oregon State with a final of 118-85 at Gibb Pool Saturday.

This is the first time in recent years that OSU has swept both days of competition. The Cougars and Beavers first began their two meet tradition in 1993. Oregon State defeated WSU 140-121 Friday night.

Competing with only 11 swimmers on its roster, WSU still managed to open competition with a win in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3 minutes, 54.23 seconds. It would be their only lead in the team scoring for the rest of the way. The Cougars would win four of the 11 events.

"You can see the effects of the taper and it is starting to show," WSU coach Rocco Aceto said. "We were real rough today. Last night we swam fast and today we raced. OSU did a great job in racing and we will see them at Pac-10s."

On the Beavers' side, freshman Naya Higashijima (San Mateo, Calif.) stunned the crowd with back-to-back victories in the 1,650 freestyle (17:39.23) and the 200 freestyle (1:55.05). In all, Higashijima swam a total of 2,350 yards, competing later in the 500 freestyle (5:06.47).

Seniors Erin Eldridge (Kirkland) and Kelley Miedema (Cape Town, South Africa) took wins in their specialties. Eldridge finished 2:18.16 in the 200 breaststroke and Miedema finished 2:06.29 in the 200 backstroke. Freshman Melissa Hubley (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada) turned in a time of 2:05.87 good enough for first place in the 200 butterfly. The seniors' last performance at Gibb Pool marks an end of an era...

"They (seniors) have built the foundation and have paved the way for the new generation of this program," Aceto said.

This concludes the regular season for both WSU and OSU. The next test for the Cougars will be the Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach, Calif. Feb. 24-26.
