WSU Takes Strides At Pac-10 Championships

Federal Way, Wash. - The Washington State women's swim team finished strong Saturday at the Pacific-10 Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

Three members of the team qualified for the NCAA "B" cut standard.

Erin McCleave swam a lifetime best time of 50.92 in the 100 freestyle. On her way to qualifying for the NCAA "B" cut, McCleave moved into third place on the Cougar all-time top 10 list in the event.

In the 200 breaststroke, Monika Povilonyte dropped three and a half seconds from her seed time to qualify for the NCAA "B" cut standard. Her time of 2:16.53 in the event won the heat and established a lifetime best time. Her time now rasks her in the top 50 nationally.

Jane Copland swam a 2:17.20 in the 200 breaststroke to earn a NCAA "B" cut qualifying time.

In addition to achieving NCAA "B" cut times, McCleave, Povilonyte and Copland each qualified for the U.S. Open in their events listed above.

Also qualifying for the U.S.Open was McKenzie Reiter in the 200 breaststroke. Her time of 2:18.40 in the event marked her lifetime best and is fourth on the all-time top 10 list.

The 400 freestyle relay team of McCleave, Katie Van Horne, Danielle Berish and Kayli Changstrom finished eighth in the Pac-10 in the event and recorded the best time for WSU in three years with a mark of 3:27.90.

Five additional WSU swimmers also established lifetime best times in the 100 freestyle Saturday. Emily Chandler swam a time of 55.96 to win the heat. Candace Rodda swam a time of 57.92 to set a personal best time. Larissa Barth swam a 54.25 and finished second in the heat to teammate Sheena Mills. Mills established her lifetime best with a time of 53.79. Berish also set a lifetime best time with a 53.10 in the event.

The NCAA Championships will be held March 17-19 an Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
