Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Washington State, after scoring in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, surrendered two runs in the 11th inning, suffering a 6-4 Pacific-10 Conference loss to Arizona Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Garrett Alwert (1-2) pitched 4.1 innings in relief of starter Bryce Chamberlin, allowing two runs and four hits in the losing effort for WSU (11-26 overall, 3-8 Pac-10). Mark Worrell (2-3) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits in notching the win for the Wildcats (28-13, 7-4).

Justin Hart and Jay Miller led the Cougars with two hits each. Three Arizona players had multiple-hit games, led by Terrence Taylor's three.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead after the first, but the Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the second when Steve Mortimer hit a solo home run, his third of the season, to centerfield.

Arizona went ahead 2-1 in the third, but WSU responded in its half of the inning, when Hart's single to centerfield plated Dustin Realini.

The Wildcats added two runs in the fourth, taking a 4-2 lead. The Cougars then rallied with single runs in the eighth and ninth to send the game into extra innings.

In the eighth, Jonathan Fender reached on an error by Arizona third baseman Brad Boyer. After Hart flied out to left field, Miller doubled to left and Jeremy Farrar grounded out to second base, allowing Fender to score.

Derek Bruce led-off the ninth with a single and advanced to second on Collin Henderson's sacrifice bunt. Bruce advanced to third when Robert Stahlke flied out to right field, then scored on a passed ball to pull the Cougars even 4-4.

Following a scoreless tenth, the Wildcats took a two-run lead in the top of the 11th. Their first run came on a Dallas Haught homer. After an Alwert strikeout, Lee Franklin hit a wind blown triple off the right field fence, then scored on Brain Anderson's single.

The two teams complete their series tomorrow at noon. WSU will send junior Aaron MacKenzie to the mound.
