PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University completed its first controlled scrimmage of the spring season and it was the defense getting off to the quicker start.

"I think our defense is a little ahead of our offense right now, said head coach Bill Doba. "Intensity-wise I'm happy with the way they played. The defense was moving all over the field.

"We still need to improve in a lot of areas and that's why we have spring football."

Offensively sophomore-to-be DeMaundray Woolridge carried seven times for 23 yards, including a 14-yard burst on his final carry. Dwight Tardy, Kevin McCall and Isao Puailoa also had carries from the running back position. Junior quarterback Alex Brink completed 4-of-7 passes for 26 yards, including an 11-yard strike to tight end Jed Collins. Brink was one of four quarterbacks to take snaps in the scrimmage, along with Gary Rogers, Cole Morgan and Arkelon Hall.

Juniors-to-be Michael Bumpus and Finas Rabb each had two catches as eight different receivers caught passes on the day.

The Cougars' first full scrimmage is set for next 9:30 a.m., Saturday, April 1, at Martin Stadium.--wsucougars.com--
