Oklahoma Defeats Cougar Baseball to Avoid Series Sweep

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma posted a 14-2 victory over Washington State to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Cougars in nonconference baseball, Sunday at Dale Mitchell Park.

Washington State (13-5), which finished its six-game, three-city road trip at 3-3, was outhit 18-4 by the No. 25 Sooners. Andrew Doyle (4-1) went seven innings for the win while James Wise (0-1) took the loss.

"It was a tough game for us and we ran out of steam," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "I feel good about the road trip, but I felt like we could have been 4-2."

The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first when John Desmarais led off with a double, moved to third on a ground out and scored on Paul Gran's sacrifice fly.

Oklahoma took the lead with a pair of runs in the second and put the game away with a six-run third. Spencer Selby homered with one out in the second and Trey Sperring plated the go-ahead run with a two-out, RBI-single.

In the third, Aaron Baker bunted for a hit with one out. J.T. Wise singled and Selby was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Casey Johnson singled in a run and Connor Lambert came in from the Cougar bullpen. Tyson Seng singled in one and Matt Harughty doubled in two to increase Oklahoma's lead to 6-1. A wild pitch scored another run and Mike Gosse capped the uprising with a run-scoring single.

The Cougars picked up their other run in the sixth. Gran walked with one out, moved to second on a ground out, and scored on Jared Prince's RBI-single. Oklahoma added a run in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Washington State opens its Pacific-10 Conference season hosting California in a three-game series Thursday, March 20-Saturday, March 22. Thursday and Friday are each scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start. Saturday is slated for a noon first pitch.
