PULLMAN, Wash. - The No. 6 Stanford Cardinal volleyball team took a 30-17, 30-16, 30-23, win over Washington State University to open Pacific-10 Conference play Thursday night at WSU's Bohler Gym.

"That is a painful loss to everyone in our program, to a very good team," WSU Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. "We are a much better team than the team that performed tonight. The biggest thing is that we re-focus our efforts and get ready for Cal tomorrow."

Stanford (10-1 overall, 1-0 Pac-10) was led by Kristin Richards' match-high 15 kills (.400 hpct) as the Cardinal hit .400 for the match and kept WSU at .111. Stanford's Foluke Akinradewo had eight blocks and Bryn Kehoe had 38 assists.

The Cougars (12-3, 0-1) were led by the 10 kills from freshman Jackie Albright and 10 kills from sophomore Brittany Johnson. Corina Beyer had 22 assists and Tara West led the Cougs with three blocks. WSU played without the services of starting defensive specialist Jalen Pendon (knee injury) and starting libero, Kelly Hyder (concussion).

"Some people were nervous in the first two games," Johnson said. "We played better as a team in the third game. We were used to the rotation (and) we stepped up serving and passing."

Friday night, Washington State hosts No. 8 California (11-1, 0-1), 30-17, 30-16, 30-24 losers at No. 4 Washington Thursday.
