PULLMAN, Wash. - Robb Akey, 32, has been named an assistant coach at Washington State University after stints at Weber State and Northern Arizona, Cougar head coach Mike Price announced today. Akey replaces Larry Lewis, who earlier this month was named Idaho State's new head coach.

Akey spent four years at Northern Arizona, including the last three as defensive coordinator and linebacker coach. Priot to that he spent six years as an assistant at his alma mater Weber State. While with the Wildcats he coached the defensive line and coordinated special teams.

"Robb will coach the defensive line along with Mike Walker," Price said of Akey's assignment. "Robb is a great motivator and will bring excitement to our program," added Price.

Akey, who played for Price at Weber State, is a 1988 Wildcat graduate and was one of the team's top defensive players. In 1987 when Weber State finished 10-3 and earned the school's first-ever NCAA playoff bid, Akey made 67 tackles, had two sacks and recovered two fumbles while earning All-Big Sky Conference first team honors and honorable mention All-America recognition.

During his undergraduate play, Akey saw action as a defensive tackle, linebacker and defensive end.

"Mike Price," Akey said when asked why he was making the move from Northern Arizona to WSU. "That had a lot to do with my decision."

Akey and wife Molly, who is from Clarkston, are the parents of two-year old Jack.
