Final Stats

PULLMAN, Wash. - Wayne Daman Jr. fired the first complete game of his career leading Washington State to a 5-1 victory over UCLA in the opening game of their Pacific-10 Conference series Friday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Daman was masterful all afternoon as he allowed a first-inning run before shutting the Bruins (28-23, 12-7) down the rest of the way. He retired six of the last seven batters he faced and 16 of the final 19 as the Cougars (26-23, 9-13) won for the eighth time in their last 12 conference games.

The complete game marked the first by a Cougar since Mar. 28 of this season when Jayson Miller went the distance in a 2-1 victory over Brigham Young. Daman finished his afternoon allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts as he improved to 5-4 this season.

The Bruins struck early, scoring a run in the first after back-to-back two-out singles by Cody Decker and Gabe Cohen scored Brandon Crawford for the 1-0 lead. It was a short-lived lead as the Cougars struck for three in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff double by Travis Coulter followed by a Scott Suttmeier single tied the game at 1-1. A single and sacrifice put runners at second and third for Simi Reynolds who doubled down the right field line for the 3-1 lead.

Back-to-back doubles by Paul Gran and Jared Prince leading off the fifth produced the Cougars fourth run of the day. One out later, Jeff Miller's sacrifice fly to center scored Prince, extending the lead to 5-1.

That was more than enough offense for the Cougars who are now one win shy of tying last year's total of 10 conference wins.

Offensively Gran went 2-for-4 with two runs scored to continue his torrid pace. Over the past 17 games, the junior third baseman is hitting .451 (32-71) with five home runs, 17 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

UCLA starter Tyson Brummett also went the distance for the seventh time this season as his record falls to 9-5. Brummett allowed five runs on nine hits with six strikeouts in his eight innings of work. At the plate Cohen was the only Bruin with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

These same two teams continue their series Saturday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field with a scheduled 2 p.m. first pitch.
