The changing of the defense to a 3-4 meant the addition of the BUCK position as one of the rushing outside linebackers. One of the Cougars better athletes and leaders of the defense is three-time all-conference selection senior Travis Long who will make the switch from defensive end to outside linebacker in 2012. Sophomore Logan Mayes will be the other veteran sliding out into the new position after he appeared in seven games in 2011 in pass-rushing situations and erupted for 4.5 sacks in April's spring game.

Two newcomers who will get a chance to learn from Long and Mayes will be a couple talented athletic freshmen in Kache Palacio and Khalil Pettway who each put up big sack numbers in high school.
