TUCSON, Ariz. - The Washington State soccer team (5-4-2) lost their first Pacific-10 Conference match to Arizona (10-2-0) 3-1, Friday at Murphey Stadium. The Cougars surrendered the tying and winning goals within five minutes of each other.
"We knew the game was going to provide a challenging environment for us," Head Coach Matt Potter said. "We are disappointed with the result but anything can happen in conference play and we look forward to Sunday."
WSU's Alix Rustrum scored the first goal of the match at the 41:20 mark. After a series of Cougar passes, the junior ran onto a ball behind the Wildcat defense and scored on UA goalkeeper McCall Smith from 12-yards out.
With under a minute left in the first half Wildcat Jennifer Klein tied the game 1-1, assisted by Althea Jones and Kamaya Damwijk.
Arizona took the 2-1 lead less than five minutes into the second half when Damwijk took advantage of a fumbled Cougar clearance and scored from inside WSU's 18-yard box.
Wildcat Candice Wilks scored the final goal of the match at the 62:07 mark. Mallory Miller and Jennifer Klein provided the assist for the final goal of the game.
