Rivard Closes Door on Warriors, Parrish Earns Eighth Victory

LEWISTON, Idaho -- Starting pitcher Wade Parrish earned his eighth victory of the year and Reggie Rivard picked up his fourth save as the Washington State Cougars (23-21) escaped with a 5-4 win over Lewis-Clark State (37-13) Friday night at Harris Field in a non-conference game.

Parrish (8-2) pitched eight innings while giving up 10 hits and striking out eight. The sophomore lefty from Othello, Wash. gave up only two runs through the first seven innings before LCSC rallied for a pair in the bottom of the eighth.

Rivard entered the game in the ninth to close the game for the Cougs. The sophomore from Boneville, Alberta allowed only one hit and struck out one to record his team-leading fourth save.

Adam Huxhold (6-3) started on the mound and was the victim of a season-high five errors for LCSC. Huxhold gave up four runs in his five inning appearance, with only two being earned.

Lewiston native Ryan Baerlocher gave his best pitching performance of the year as he came on in relief of Huxhold. The converted infielder gave up only one run and one hit in his four inning stint on the mound. He struck out six while only walking one.

Ray Hattenburg was the only Coug to record more than one hit, as he went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring single to his credit. Catcher Ryan Smith and freshman Jason Grove both added two-out RBI singles in the Cougs second night win of the season.

A pair of Brian's led LCSC at the plate as they outhit the Cougs 11-7. Brian Flannagan was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Brian Nannini was 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Lewis-Clark jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second, but did not score again until the sixth inning. WSU took the lead with two runs in the fourth and added two more in the fifth. A single run in the sixth closed out the scoring for WSU and pushed their lead to 5-2.

LCSC rallied for two runs in the eighth to pull within one, but couldn't add another to tie the game. Rivard entered in the ninth and preseved the victory for the Cougs.

The same two teams will meet tommorow at Bailey Field in Pullman for a 1:00 p.m. season series finale. Todd Meldahl (4-5) will open for the Cougs on the mound with normal starter Jamaal Gaines also expected to see action in relief. The Cougs hold a 2-1 advantage over the Warriors in '98.
