PULLMAN, Wash. -- First baseman Adam Stokey was 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs as the Gonzaga Bulldogs (9-26) defeated the Washington State Cougars (17-15) 14-2 Wednesday night at Bailey Field in a non-conference baseball game.
Stokey, a freshman from Vancouver, Wash., connected on his third and fourth home runs of the year and had six RBI on the night to boost his average to a team-leading .366. Right fielder Ryan Burke and center fielder Joel Miller each added two hits to the Zags ninth win of the season. All Gonzaga starters successfully reached base in the game and all but Bo Hart recorded hits.
For Washington State, Casey Kelley and Shawn Stevenson provided all the scoring. Kelley was 2-for-3 and hit his league-leading 15th home run. Entering the game Kelley was ranked 17th in the nation in that department and is now only nine away from breaking John Olerud's school record of 23. Stevenson was 1-for-3 with a solo home run, his fifth of the season.
Kevin Workman (1-1) was very impressive in his six innings of work. The right hander gave up two runs on seven base hits while striking out four. Brian Newton and Forrest Higgins came out of the bullpen, and combined to shut out the Cougs in the final three innings.
Jason Grove (0-1) was sent to the mound for WSU and was a victim of three costly errors by the Cougar defense. Grove gave up 11 runs in three innings of work, but only five were earned.
Robin Guiver entered in relief of Grove and pitched well, with the exception of two home runs. In five innings of work, Guiver gave up five hits and struck out three.
Gonzaga jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after their half of the first inning, much to the help of Stokey's three-run home run. Stevenson stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first and needed only one pitch to put a fastball over the right field fence.
The Cougs were their own worst enemy in this one, committing four error which led to six unearned runs. They also left nine runners on base.
Washington State will return to Pac-10 North play Friday with a 3 p.m. game against No. 20 Washington at Bailey Field. The Cougs are 2-2 against the Huskies this season and are only one game behind them for the lead in the NorPac. A doubleheader will be played at 12 p.m. Saturday, with the season finale scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
