STANFORD, Calif. - The Washington State Women's Golf Team ended the first day of the Peg Barnard California Collegiate, played on the par-71, 6,037 yard Stanford Golf Course, with a team score of 307 and in a tie for eighth place.

"We're in a bit of a slump right now," said Head Golf Coach Walt Williams. "We have some players that are struggling so that really puts dents in our overall team score."

In the lead for the Cougars after day one is junior Tracy Broders. The Oregon native shot a first round score of 73 (+2) which put her in a tie for ninth place. Also in the top-25 for WSU after the first round is freshman Diana Hong. A score of 75 (+4) put Hong in a tie for 21st after the first day of competition.

"Broders and Hong have been playing pretty good," Williams said. "But right now we needs more than just a couple players to be doing well."

Sophomore Jessica Black shot a 79 (+8) in the first round of the tournament, only four strokes out of the top-25. Sophomore Amy Eneroth and junior Brooke Henderson both shot first round scores of 80 (+9), placing them in a tie for 47th.

"Right now we're hitting the ball sideways," Williams said. "We have a lot of shots going into the trees, so the main thing to focus on is getting our shots to go where we want them. Overall, though, we're still competing hard. We have some good players and some tough competitors."

The women will continue with the second round of the 36-hole tournament tomorrow with a start time of 8 a.m.
