PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University senior tight end Troy Bienemann has been named a semifinalists for the 2005 Draddy Trophy, it was announced today by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF).

Bienemann is one of 184 semifinalists nominated for the Draddy Trophy, known by many as the "Academic" Heisman. The award is one of college football's most sought after and competitive awards, recognizing the top student-athlete in the country for combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership.

This season Bienemann, one of four senior captains for the Cougars, has helped WSU to a 3-1 start entering Saturday's game against Stanford. He has caught 11 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns, including a four-catch, 58-yard, one-touchdown effort at Nevada.

In addition to his on-field honors, Bienemann has twice been named to the Pac-10 all-academic and CoSIDA all-district VIII academic teams. He has been a member of Student Athlete Advisory Committee at WSU, has participated in the Athletic Department sponsored grade school reading program and has tutored WSU freshmen in a pre-counseling program.

Semifinalists for the Draddy Trophy are nominated by their schools and must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have at least a 3.0 GPA, demonstrated outstanding football ability as a first team player, and shown strong leadership and citizenship.

The NFF Awards Committee, comprised of former coaches, Hall of Famers and college administrators, will select and announce 15 finalists Oct. 27. The winner, also selected by the committee, will be announced at the 48th NFF Awards Dinner Dec. 6, in New York City. East finalist will also be recognized that night as part of the 2005 National Scholar-Athlete Class, receiving an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.
