LONG BEACH, Calif. - The young and the old shared the spotlight as Washington State swam to an eighth place finish at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships Saturday at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
Freshman Melissa Hubley and seniors Kelley Miedema and Erin Eldridge each bettered NCAA optional qualifying marks in the final day of action, with Eldridge (Kirkland) cruising to an eighth place finish in the 200 breaststroke at 2:16.93.
Hubley (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) kept close to her 200 butterfly record time of 2:00.87 set Thursday night during the Pac-10 Time Trials. In the final day of competition, she clocked a 2:02.67 in the morning preliminaries, then came back to capture eleventh in the consolation finals in a time of 2:01.96.
One school record fell as Miedema (Cape Town, South Africa) broke the 200 backstroke record in the preliminaries with a 2:01.82 finish. She then finished fifteenth in the consolation finals at 2:02.64.
WSU's Jill Olson (Seattle) captured seventeenth in the 1600 freestyle finals in 17:14.94, while WSU's 400 freestyle relay team of Miedema, Sara Schmied, Rachelle Carano and Rebecca Cohen clocked 3:31.79 to capture eighth.
In the bonus finals of the 100 freestyle, Lindsay Henahan (Rochester, New York) was timed in :52.34 to finish twenty-first.
Arizona, the host school, captured the league title, with Stanford and California second and third, respectively. Next came UCLA, followed by USC, ASU, Washington, Washington State and Oregon State.
