SAN. DIEGO, Calif - After a Saturday full of extreme weather, the Cougars were ready Sunday to compete in the finals of the 28th annual San Diego Crew Classic.

The top competition from all heats entered the second day of the regatta and the Cougars' novice and junior varsity boat placed in the top three of their finals, while the varsity championed the Petite Final for seventh overall.

"Great job by both the junior varsity and novice boats to do so well against competition at that level, " said head coach Tammy Crawford. "The Petite Final was not where we wanted the varsity eight, so I expect them to step it up next week."

After what coach Crawford called a disappointing Saturday, the varsity eight took the water in the Jessop Whittier Petite Final and captured first place with a time of 7:22.22, about three seconds faster than second place Stanford. The win laced the varsity eight in seventh overall as the Cup Grand Final determined places one through six.

In the women's JV Grand Final, WSU took third with a time of 7:12.12, Virginia placed second at 7:07.75, and the University of Washington earned first with a time of 7:05.73.

The novice eight won second place in the Grand Final with a time of 7:20.5, just five seconds behind first place Washington. California placed third with a time of 7:30.07

WSU's next regatta will be televised on a tape-delay basis by FOX Sports Northwest Net versus the No. 2 ranked University of Washington Huskies at 3 p.m. at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River Saturday, April 14. This will be the first time a WSU rowing event has ever been televised.
