SOMIS, Calif. - - All-American Kim Welch jumped 13 spots during the final round of the Pacific-10 Conference Championships at the par 72, 6,405 yard Saticoy Country Club to finish the tournament in a tie with teammate Anastasia Kostina for 14th, Wednesday.
Welch, who entered the third round in an eight-way tie for 27th, shot the second lowest round of the day with a 73, knocking six shots off of her second round score and making the largest move on the leader board.
The Sacramento, Calif. native made history yet again for the Cougars as she became the first women's golfer to be named to the All-Pac-10 First Team. Along with Welch's honor, Anastasia Kostina earned an All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection.
The play of Welch prompted Head Coach Walt Williams to say, "Kim hit the ball fairly well, but she took some costly shots. During the first two rounds there were a few places where she missed shots that penalized her, but she came back today and played hard to finish in the top 15."
Kostina continued to play well finishing the 54-hole tournament in a tie for 14th, while her sister Maria Kostina moved up two spots to end the tournament knotted in a tie for 39th.
As a team, the Cougars shot a 315 during the final round of 18, finishing the tournament in ninth place, 25 shots ahead of Oregon State.
"This was the longest course that we have played to date," Williams said. "It was a very tight course with fast greens, making it extremely difficult for us to perform."
Jay-Lee Longbottom finished the three-day tournament in 50th, while Heather O'Leary, who is competing as an individual, finished in 52nd place. Sophomore Stephanie Parsley moved up one spot to end the 54-hole tournament in 56th place to round out the Cougar contingent.
