Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. - Jeff Miller and Zach McAngus each drove in two runs and Jared Prince allowed just one unearned run through seven innings as Washington State University opened play at the Johnny Quik Classic with a 7-1 victory over Bucknell Monday afternoon at Beiden Field.

With the win the Cougars improve to 16-4 on the season while Bucknell falls to 3-6.

The Cougars jumped on top in the bottom of the first as Jay Miller led off with a walk then scored on Jeff Miller's infield single to short. The lead was pushed to 2-0 in the fourth as a leadoff walk again hurt Bucknell. Jim Murphy walked, was sacrificed to second then scored on Greg Lagreid's RBI single to left.

Bucknell cut the lead in half in the fifth courtesy of an unearned run but WSU quickly answered in its half of the inning. Without the benefit of a hit, the Cougars managed to make it 3-1 thanks to a hit batter, stolen base and an RBI groundout off the bat of McAngus.

The Cougars loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs before McAngus and Jeff Miller each drove in runs with sacrifice flies, extending the lead to 5-1.

That was more than enough for Prince. The freshman righthander, making his third start of the season, worked the first seven innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits. He struck out five and did not walk a batter as he improved to 3-0. Prince has yet to allow an earned run in 17 innings of work this season.

Matt Way came on in the eighth to work two perfect innings of relief. For the second straight game WSU pitchers did not surrender a walk and have 20 strikeouts over the last 18 innings of work.

WSU added two unearned runs in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Jeff Miller finished the contest with two hits, as did Travis Coulter, who added a pair of runs scored. Jay Miller scored two runs without the benefit of a hit. Jay Miller has now reached base in 19 of the Cougars' 20 games this season.

WSU continues play at the Johnny Quik Classic Tuesday with a 4 p.m. contest against Binghampton.
