Final Stats

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Washington State could not overcome a late UCLA lead and dropped the opener of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference baseball series, 5-3, Friday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Starter Eddie Bonine (6-6) received the loss for the Cougars (15-24 overall, 2-11 in the Pac-10). Bonine pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. Mike Kunes (6-3) notched the win for the Bruins, while Doug Silva recorded his second save of the season for UCLA (19-24, 5-5).

"We lost a tough game," WSU head coach Tim Mooney said. "Bonine pitched a good game, but he had that one bad inning."

Justin Hart and Wes Falkenborg led the Cougars offensively. Hart was 2-for-4 at the plate, while Falkenborg hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the first inning. Jeff LaRue scored two runs for the Cougars.

"We played a great ball game," Mooney said. "If some of the balls we hit go in just a little different spot it could have made a difference."

WSU got out to a quick start on the strength of Falkenborg's homer, which plated LaRue, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead after one inning.

The Cougars had a chance to add to the lead in the third, but Evan Hecker was thrown out at home trying to score on a Hart single to center field. Hecker was ejected on the play for using excessive force on a collision with Bruin catcher Josh Arhart at the plate.

UCLA knotted the score at two in the bottom of the third. WSU reclaimed the lead briefly, in the top of the sixth when LaRue scored on a Robert Stahlke single to extend the Cougar lead to 3-2.

The Bruins responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and another run in the bottom of the seventh. Silva allowed only one WSU hit in the game's final 2 1/3 innings to get the save.

The two teams resume the series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
