TEMPE, Ariz. --- Washington State experienced an 18-shot improvement over their first round score at the Pac-10 Championship on Tuesday, but the Cougars are still peering out of a deep hole in 10th place.

"We knew we had a big challenge coming into this competition," head coach Walt Williams said. "We obviously haven't played the way we would have liked, but the important thing is that we don't hang our heads and come out and finish up the best we can on Wednesday."

Jennifer Dodd and Tasha Browner were the team leaders in the second round, contributing a pair of 78's. Despite an 80 on Tuesday, sophomore Donna Bell continues to pace Washington State in 36th place. The British Columbia native is 11-over par.

WSU is 34 strokes back of ninth place Oregon State. Arizona State and Arizona are tied at the top of the leader board with scores of 586, while Stanford is three strokes back in third place. Monday's leader, California, dropped to fourth after shooting a 302 in the second round.

The battle for the individual conference title is also a tightly contested race. Arizona's Natalie Gulbis has a two-stroke lead over teammate Lorena Ochoa, and California's Sarah Huarte and Vikki Laing.

The final round begins Wednesday at 8 a.m.
