Box Score

PASCO, Wash. -- - Washington State had an eight-run first inning, but Gonzaga outscored the Cougars 14-2 afterward to post a 14-10 baseball victory Sunday at Columbia Basin College in Pasco.

Starter Brandon Hundt went 3 1/2 innings and allowed seven runs on six hits for WSU (3-3). Zach Fisher (0-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, allowing four runs on four hits and took the loss. Erik Dworkis (1-0) pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless ball in relief of starter Errol Simonitsch to get the win for the Bulldogs (4-5).

"We brought Hundt in and he wasn't as sharp as we hoped," WSU coach Tim Mooney said. "We didn't want to use him for a save he might not have to get and we thought we could get four or five innings out of him."

The Cougars again reached double-digit figures in hits with 11. Collin Henderson, Bookie Gates and Derek Bruce each collected two hits to lead the way. Bruce also hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth inning. Third basemen Jeffrey LaRue added his second homer of the season an inning earlier, also a solo home run. Brian Munhall and Garth Blumberg led Gonzaga with three hits each, while four Gonzaga players had two hits. Blumberg and Eric Rodland both had three-run home runs for the winners

"We did a decent job at the plate today," Mooney said. "We had a pretty good first inning, but I thought we could have done a better job with some of the chances we had later in the game."

The Cougars opened its half of the first inning with its biggest run output of the season in a single inning. Grant Richardson's single plated Henderson for the game's first run. Jon Baeder followed with a single to left field that scored Gates. Simonitsch then walked Bruce Jacobsen with the bases loaded to score La Rue and walked Bruce to score Richardson. Reliever Steve Hare then walked Brent Robertson to score Baeder. The next batter, Henderson, walked to score Jacobsen. Evan Hecker then followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield off new pitcher Kyle Nearhood that brought home Bruce. Gates ended the scoring in the inning with a single to left field that scored Robertson.

Gonzaga answered with three runs in the second and four runs in the fourth. LaRue's home run in the fourth gave WSU a 9-7 lead, but the Bulldogs tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 10-9 lead. Bruce's homer in the fifth knotted the score at 10. Gonzaga put up four runs in its half of the eighth inning and the Cougars could not overcome the deficit.
