MINNEAPOLIS - Reserve Megan Johnson broke a 2-2 tie with a goal in the 70th minute to lift 25th-ranked Minnesota past visiting Washington State 3-2 in a non-conference women's soccer match at the St. Paul Campus Soccer Field.

The Golden Gophers (4-0-0) held a 2-0 halftime advantage with a 22-yard goal from Jennifer Walek in the 19th minute and a six-yard score by reserve Kristen Peterson in the 39th minute.

Walek assisted the game winner as she cleared a ball from her defensive third downfield to Johnson, who fired a scoring shot from 12 yards out.

The Cougars (1-2-0) got both second-half goals from junior forward Amy Chippendale (Kearny, N.J./Kearny). It was the second multiple-goal match of Chippendale's career (at Arizona in 1995). The first goal came less than two minutes into the half on a free kick to the far right post. Junior Randi Glas (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) was credited with the assist. The second score, in the 62nd minute, was set up by a cross from junior Kimberly Schelpf (Ocean, N.J./Ocean) that Chippendale put inside the left post from six yards away.

Washington State returns home to host Santa Clara, ranked No. 6 in last week's Soccer America poll, Friday, Sept. 12 at 3 p.m.
