FULLERTON, Calif. - Patrick Claussen's RBI-double in the top of the 11th inning lifted Washington State past No. 8 Cal State Fullerton 9-8, Tuesday night in nonconference baseball at Goodwin Field.
Claussen's game-winner scored Ian Sagdal, who doubled to open the frame. Both hits came off Willie Kuhl (1-2) and the Cougars (9-5) earned their second extra-inning road win over a nationally-ranked team this season (Mississippi State).
"It was a back and forth game and we got better as the game went along," Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "It is not often you walk 11 and win, but our guys found a way."
Anthony Drobnick (2-0), the seventh pitcher of the night for the Cougars, blanked the Titans (10-6) over the final-two innings to pick up his second win in as many games.
After Cal State Fullerton chased Washington State starter Kyle Swannack with three runs in the second, the Cougars rallied to take a 6-3 lead.
Taylor Ard put Washington State on the board with a solo home run in the fourth, his fourth of the season. In the sixth, Ard delivered a run-scoring single with two outs and Derek Jones followed with his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot, to give the Cougars a 5-3 advantage. Adam Nelubowich and Tommy Richards capped the rally with back-to-back doubles.
The Titans scored a run off reliever Sean Hartnett in the sixth, but Washington State responded with two runs in the seventh. Claussen led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by P.J. Jones. Nate Blackham followed with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and came home on a single by Jason Monda to increase the Cougars' lead to 8-4.
Cal State Fullerton tied the game in the eighth with four runs off Kellen Camus. In the 10th, Nelubowich tried to score on a single by Richards, but was cut down at the plate.
